HACIENDA CHORLAVI

Known for its inherent beauty and for being an enchanting, living tradition itself, Hacienda Chorlaví is located in the northern Andes near the city of Ibarra. Its design and decoration inspired by the purest European style, the beautiful old home was built using techniques dating back to the Caranqui-Inca era. Within its walls, huge canvases where the talent of many Ecuadorian painters can be admired are the memories and mementoes of the Tobar family that has owned the property for six generations.

Like most Ecuadorian haciendas, Chorlaví has a fascinating history. It is believed that more than five centuries ago, this was the place where Huayna Cápac, an Inca emperor, fell in love with Pacha, the princess of the Caranquis tribe. For this tribe, the word Chorlaví meant “the nest of love” and to this day still symbolizes for the land’s current inhabitants, the laughter and magic of eternal lovers. Later, in the year 1620 the land was the first purchased in the region by the Jesuits who resided here until their expulsion from the country in the 18th century.

Today, Chorlaví maintains its history and many untouched traditions of times gone by offering visitors unique and enjoyable experiences that include colorful folkloric dances and live music, in addition to local cuisine from the province of Imbabura. The charming guest rooms with modern amenities – some with fireplaces – are sheltered by millennial trees and are surrounded by beautiful gardens and orchards.

Chorlaví offers a variety of activities both on and off site. Guests are invited to relax in the hacienda’s spa and enjoy a soothing hot stone, relaxing, stress reducing or energizing massage in addition to the swimming pool, Turkish bath, Jacuzzi and sauna. In the evening, enjoy a pint in front of the fireplace in Chorlaví’s authentic Irish pub. Off site, take a ride on the newly restored train from Ibarra to Salinas to discover a unique, Afro-Ecuadorian community, its culture and cuisine or book an extreme sports package. Options include rafting, canyoning, bungee jumping, rock climbing, paragliding and trekking.

Ishpingo Tours invites you to enjoy the magical charm of Chorlaví in combination with other haciendas in the region.
